Vertical vs Horizontal Split Power Bases
— by Tempur-Pedic on Jun 26, 2020
Every year you spend about 2,482 hours in your bed. Make every minute count with an adjustable space to yourself. Featuring premium technologies like QuietMode™ that gently lifts your mattress to an anti-snore position and PerfectSeat™ that adjusts to ergonomic shapes to optimize support, adjustable power bases elevate your sleep space to the ultimate holistic sleep experience.
You may have noticed we have a few different options when it comes to split adjustable power bases–a Split King, Split California King, King, and California King. You may be thinking, “that’s great, but the King and California King aren’t split,” however, despite what you may expect, the King and California King power bases are split too. While our King and California King mattresses are one piece, our King, California King, Split King, and Split California King bases and foundations are all two separate pieces. The King and California King bases and foundations are split horizontally with separate head and feet portions whereas the Split King and Split California King bases and foundations are split vertically with the pieces sitting side by side.
Our King and California King are split horizontally to allow for easier movement in and out of your home. Not only for delivery purposes, but if you decide to move homes or rooms, the horizontal-split design makes transporting the base easier through doorways and hallways. The dimensions of a horizontal-split King are 75.5” x 39.75” and the dimensions of a split California King are 71.5” x 41.75”. The size will not affect how the base operates and will operate as one King or California King unit, moving up and down on both sides at the same time. As far as sheets, you can continue to use your normal King or California King sheets because they will fit our mattresses–as it’s one solid unit.
A vertically split mattress is a great option if you and your partner have different sleep preferences. While some prefer to sleep flat on a firm mattress, others prefer to sleep raised on a soft mattress. Whatever your needs are, a split mattress and/or base option could be your solution to more beneficial rest. A Split King is simply two twin long mattresses laying side by side, whereas a Split California King is split directly down the middle. The dimensions of a Split King are 37.5” x 79.5”, while the dimensions for a Split California King are 35.5” x 83.5”.
To make your bed, you will need a Split King or Split California King sheet set. The set includes two individual fitted sheets that fit each mattress and one flat sheet to cover both mattresses. If you’re ordering directly from Tempur-Pedic, the set also includes two king-sized pillowcases. Or you can order two twin long sheet sets for your Split King; but, please note these sets do not include the King-sized flat sheet. Another important note is when it comes to Split mattresses, be sure they are the same depth, so you and your partner won’t be sleeping with one higher than the other. For example, the ProAdapt Firm and ProBreeze Medium Hybrid are compatible because they’re both 12” deep. However, the ProAdapt Firm and LuxeBreeze Firm, are not compatible because the LuxeBreeze is 13” deep, while the ProAdapt is 12” deep. One final note is if down the road you decide you no longer want a split sleep system, you can always switch to a solid King or California King mattress and sync your bases to adjust as one unit.
Split mattresses and bases are a wonderful addition if both partners want a unique sleep experience; however, you do not need to order a Split King or Split California King if your concern is fitting the base through the doorway.
